The Best Time of Year to Remove or Trim Trees in Chattanooga

For most planned work, late fall through late winter is the sweet spot. Dead and dangerous trees are the exception: the best time for those is now.

Why late fall and winter work best

  • The crew can see what it's doing. With the leaves off, the structure of the tree, dead wood and weak forks are easy to spot.
  • Less weight to handle. Bare branches are lighter and easier to lower in pieces, which matters for trees over roofs and fences.
  • Less damage to the yard. Your lawn and garden beds are dormant, so equipment tracks and debris do less harm. Dry winter stretches are ideal.
  • Easier scheduling. Spring and summer storms in the Tennessee Valley fill every crew's calendar fast. Planned work is easier to book in the quiet months.
  • Better for the trees you keep. Pruning cuts made in the dormant season close well when growth starts in spring, and disease spreads less in the cold.

Oaks: prune in the cold months

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills oaks. It can be spread by sap beetles drawn to fresh pruning cuts, and those beetles are most active in spring and early summer. Extension services in states where oak wilt is common advise pruning oaks only in the dormant season. Chattanooga is full of oaks, so it's a simple habit worth following: unless a branch is broken or dangerous, schedule oak pruning for late fall or winter.

Flowering trees: prune after they bloom

Dogwoods, redbuds, cherries and other spring bloomers set their flower buds the year before. Prune them in winter and you cut off this spring's flowers. Light pruning right after they bloom keeps the show. If the goal is removal, as with a failing tree, timing doesn't matter.

Nesting season

Most native birds and their active nests are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Spring and early summer are peak nesting season. If you see an active nest in a tree you want removed, and the tree isn't an immediate danger, it's often best to wait until the young have left. Doing planned removals in winter avoids the issue.

What shouldn't wait

  • A tree that is cracked, splitting or newly leaning
  • Dead trees near the house, driveway, road or play areas
  • Hanging broken limbs after a storm
  • Anything touching a roof or a power line

Common questions

What is the best month to cut down a tree in Tennessee?

For planned removals, the dormant months from about November through February are usually best. The leaves are off, the ground is often firmer, and crews have more open dates than after spring storms.

When should I prune oak trees?

In the dormant season. Many extension services advise against pruning oaks in spring and early summer, when sap beetles that can spread oak wilt are active. Late fall and winter cuts carry the least risk.

Is it bad to trim trees in summer?

Light pruning, like removing dead or broken branches, can be done any time. Heavy pruning in summer heat stresses trees more, so save major work for the dormant season when you can.

Should I wait until winter to remove a dead tree?

No. A dead or failing tree near a house, road or play area should come down as soon as you can schedule it. Dead wood gets more brittle every season and is more dangerous for the crew to climb.
