Hixson stretches from the North Chattanooga line up Highway 153 and Hixson Pike toward Chickamauga Dam and the lake. It's a mix of established neighborhoods with tall, mature hardwoods, newer subdivisions, and wooded lots on the ridges and along the water. That mix means very different tree jobs from one street to the next.
Common tree jobs in Hixson
- Large oaks and tulip poplars over older homes. Many neighborhoods off Hixson Pike and Middle Valley Road have trees that have grown taller than the houses beside them. Removal usually means climbing and lowering sections by rope.
- Pines on lake and ridge lots. Pines on slopes near the water drop limbs on roofs and docks, and lean as the soil shifts.
- Dead ash trees. Emerald ash borer is now found across the county, and ash trees in older yards are dying.
- Stump grinding after storm cleanup, or before new patios, fences and pools.
Working near the lake
Lake lots have their own rules. Much of the strip along Chickamauga Lake belongs to TVA, and cutting trees on TVA land needs TVA's approval. Trees on the shoreline also hold the bank in place, so a crew may suggest pruning for a view instead of removing them. If a tree on your own land threatens the house or dock, a crew can usually take it down in sections toward the land side.
City or county?
Much of Hixson is inside Chattanooga city limits, but not all of it. It matters for two things: city brush pickup through 311 (only inside the city), and any city rules on trees in the right-of-way along your street. If you're not sure which side you're on, your property tax bill will say.

Common questions
My lot backs up to Chickamauga Lake. Can I cut trees along the shore?
Trees on your own deeded land are generally yours to manage. Much of the shoreline along Chickamauga Lake is TVA land, though, and cutting vegetation on TVA property needs TVA approval. Check your plat or call TVA before removing anything near the water.
Does the city pick up brush in Hixson?
If your address is inside Chattanooga city limits, yes. City brush pickup is requested through 311 and takes limbs up to 8 feet long and 18 inches thick. Parts of the Hixson area are unincorporated Hamilton County, where city pickup doesn't apply, so plan for the crew to haul everything.
