North Chattanooga sits just across the Tennessee River from downtown, from the North Shore up the hillsides toward Stringer's Ridge and Riverview. Many homes here are close to a hundred years old, and so are the trees around them. Lots are small, streets are narrow and some yards are steep, which makes even an ordinary removal a careful job.
Common tree jobs in North Chattanooga
- Big oaks and tulip poplars over older homes. Trees planted when the neighborhood was built now tower over the roofs. Most come down in sections, lowered by rope.
- Trees on steep hillside lots. Slopes near Stringer's Ridge and along the bluffs need extra rigging, and sometimes a crane, to keep wood from rolling into the house or the street.
- Limbs over roofs and power drops. Roof clearance pruning and limb removal over the line from the pole to the house.
- Stump grinding before new patios, parking pads and garden beds.
Tight lots and parking
Narrow streets leave little room for a chip truck and a log loader. A good crew will plan where the equipment parks, ask neighbors to move cars if needed and protect the yard from heavy machines. Send a photo of the tree and the street in front of your house, and the quote will account for access.
Trees along the street
Trees between the sidewalk and the street often sit in the city’s right-of-way. Those follow city rules, even if you have always taken care of them. Read our Chattanooga tree permit guide before cutting one, and our tree hazard checklist if you are not sure a tree needs to go.

Common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in my North Chattanooga yard?
Usually not for a tree on your own private property. The City of Chattanooga says its 2025 tree ordinance does not stop homeowners from removing trees on private land. Trees in the public right-of-way along the street are different, so ask the city before cutting one of those.
Can you remove a big tree when there's no room to drop it?
Yes. On tight lots, a climber takes the tree down in small pieces and lowers each one by rope, or a crane lifts sections over the house. Most North Chattanooga removals are done this way.
Will the city pick up the brush?
Inside city limits, Chattanooga collects brush at the curb if it is cut and stacked to the city's rules. Most tree crews haul away their own debris, so ask whether cleanup is included in the quote.
